Training and Education

We have extensive experience in training in all fields of Invasive Alien Plant control and Bush encroachment. IPS is FP&M registered offering both accredited and non-accredited courses. Our courses include:

  • Plant identification

Identifying target plants is crucial to the success of any control operation. We provide training at all levels, using books or modern techniques such as cell phone applications.

  • Herbicide Application

Our own course trains individuals in the best methods for field operations, ensuring safe and organized practices.

  • Herbicide refresher

We all forget or fall into bad habits. A refresher course in how to apply herbicides safely.​

  • Responsible use of herbicides

Mostly aimed at people not actually applying herbicides but still involved with their use. This course talks to the safety and responsibilities around herbicide use.​

  • Risk assessment

Our training programs ensure that workers understand the risks of using herbicides and are better able to protect themselves, fellow workers, and the environment

  • Aquatic weed control

Similar to the herbicide Applicator course but aimed at Aquatic weed control This is a separate course as water weeds have some unique challenges.​

  • WorkSite Management

Field operations are technical and need to be planned and conducted in an organized manor. IPS has developed our own course that trains people in the best methods for field operations.​

  • Pest Control Operator (Environmental Weed Control)

We provide training and mentoring to help individuals become registered PCOs as required by the Fertilizer, Farm Feeds, Agricultural, and Stock Remedies Act 36 of 1947.

  • Pest Control Mentoring

A requirement to become a registered PCO is that you undertake a period of mentoring under a registered PCO. IPS offers this service.​

Research and Development

With a registered Natural Scientist and Pest Control Operators, we are well placed to conduct herbicide development trials of Invasive Alien Plants.

We have conducted trials for most of the key herbicide supply companies in Southern Africa. 

Current research projects include some novel methods of controlling invasive pine species in the mountains of the Western Cape.

Consulting Services

Too many people think that managing Invasive Alien Plants is achieved by simply felling the plants.

We are currently working with Rhodes University with the aim of improving the management of prosopis species in the Northern Cape. Management plans have been drawn for numerous farmers. These include options of utilizing the Biomass for fuel, Charcoal, Bio-Char and ultimately carbon capture.

 

We are able to advise on best management practices for plant management. this includes:

  • Development of IAP management plans

  •   Advise on best practice

  • Investigation of herbicide damage

  • Risk assessment

Pest Control Training

The Fertilizer, Farm Feeds, Agricultural and Stock Remedies Act 36 of 1947 states that pesticides may only be applied by a registered Pest Control Operator (PCO) and that anyone applying herbicides for gain must also be registered as a PCO.

IPS offers training and mentoring in this field. To date we have trained more than 1500 people towards gaining their PCO license.

IPS also offers mentoring towards licensing.
